Robotics 101

This one day workshop will explore robotics options for middle school and secondary school students. Spend the day exploring VEX IQ Robots, mBot robots and Arduino kits.

Bring your Mac or PC to participate in the robot programming portion.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn the following:

  • Connections between robotics and STEM Education & Design
  • Learning about requirements for using the VEX IQ system
  • Hands-on learning with the VEX IQ and mBot robots
    • Building basic VEX IQ and mBot robots
      • Working with motors, sensors
      • Programming the robots for autonomous routines
    • VEX robotics designs for competitions
    • Investigate the VEX EDR platform for middle and high school students
  • School Robotics Programs
    • Role of competition in school robotics programs
    • Setup a robotics program in school as a club/activity or class
    • Cost of starting the program, logistics, competitions, travel, etc.
  • Hands-on learning with Arduino kits
    • Basic Arduino projects
    • Connecting electronics with STEM Education

About the Presenter

Rolly Maiquez is DP Computer Science and MYP Design Teacher at Chadwick International in Songdo, South Korea. He enjoys working with students and teachers in incorporating Design Thinking in core subject projects. Rolly is also the school’s main teacher and advisor for Robotics. He started the robotics program in 2012 with six students and one robotics kit. He now works with close to one hundred students in Grades 3 to 12 involved in over 20 VEX Robotics teams (EDR & IQ) at Chadwick International. Their school teams have won several awards at international robotics competitions and are three-time champions of the annual South Korea VEX Robotics National Competition.
